Avangard vs Lada. League newcomer visiting the championship favorite
On Saturday, January 6, the Omsk “G – Drive Arena” will host the next match of the KHL regular championship. A daring newcomer to the League, the Tolyatti Lada, will come to visit the local Avangard.
The Omsk club started 2024 with a defeat, losing at home to Ufa's Salavat Yulaev. If they had won, Avangard would have gotten almost close to Magnitogorsk Metallurg, the leader in the East, but an offensive misfire at home left Mikhail Kravets’s team in an intermediate second position. The game against Salavat did not go well from the very beginning, as a result, the Avangard hockey players left for the first break, losing the score 0-2. The second 20 minutes turned out to be the most productive in the match; the guests responded to two goals from the Omsk team with two of their own. The result 2-4 remained final.
To some extent, Avangard's failure can be attributed to the absence of Vladimir Tkachev. The team's top scorer, and Tkachev already has 57 points (15+42), was injured on December 24 in a home match against Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Without Tkachev, the strike troika of the Omsk attack fell apart, which, in addition to himself, included Spooner and Boucher. The star newcomers of the team, and literally in the last days of the outgoing year Prokhorkin, Zhafyarov and Yurcho were signed, are just getting used to Avangard’s playing schemes and cannot fully replace Tkachev.
Lada
If Avangard has one loss in its lineup, then the hospital of the Togliatti club is filled more thoroughly. Four players from the main squad have not been able to help their team for quite some time, and all four represent the attacking line. This is Canadian forward Scott Kosmachuk, as well as Russian hockey players Danila Moiseev, Alexey Ozhgikhin, Nikita Popugaev. Despite quite serious personnel losses, Lada continues to maintain the pace set from the start of the championship, still clinging to its place in the leading group of the Eastern Conference.
By the will of the calendar, before leaving for the New Year holidays, the Tolyatti team played 8 home matches in a row. The result should be considered successful - 9 points scored out of 16 possible, 4 victories, including over the leader of the Eastern Conference Magnitogorsk Metallurg 5-1 and Dynamo Moscow 4-0. Such results allow Lada to be literally one step away from third place in the East, with 57 points earned, only two points behind Ufa’s Salavat Yulaev, who is in third place.
