Ak Bars vs Amur. How will the visit of the Far Easterners to Kazan end?
Ak Bars hockey players will open the next game month of the regular KHL championship with a home match against Khabarovsk Amur. The meeting with representatives of the Far East will take place on October 1 on the ice of the Kazan Tatneft Arena.
As befits one of the main favorites of the League, the Kazan club did not speed up its preparations for the championship, relying on the second part of the season. So far, Bilyaletdinov’s team, albeit without much brilliance, are collecting their points, confidently staying at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. The star attacking line fully meets the expectations of experts; 36 goals scored is the best indicator of all teams in the Eastern Conference. While there are certain problems in defense, 27 goals conceded in 11 matches played is too much for a potential champion, but the absence of Vyacheslav Voinov has an effect here to some extent. The key defensive hockey player of Ak Bars was injured in the first match of the championship against CSKA, and is still recovering.
Ak Bars played the last away series on the route Minsk - Nizhny Novgorod not in the best way, taking only one point out of four possible. Barsy lost to Dynamo Minsk with a score of 2-3, but in Nizhny Novgorod after the end of regular time the scoreboard showed 1-1, but in overtime luck was on the side of the Torpedo hockey players. After these two misfires, the Kazan club dropped to third place in the Eastern Conference, with 15 points scored, two points behind the leading Metallurg.
Amur
The Khabarovsk team is still openly disappointing, not living up to the expectations that were placed on the team at the end of the summer off-season. The large-scale transfer campaign, as a result of which the ranks of Amur were joined by quite serious performers by KHL standards, still raises serious questions. American center forward Alex Broadhurst, who came from Omsk Avangard in the summer, is out for an indefinite period. Alexander Khokhlachev, who started brightly, noticeably wilted in the last matches and stopped scoring points. The Khabarovsk team has only 20 goals scored in 10 matches played, which is by far the absolute worst result in the East.
The Far Easterners come to Kazan with a series of four defeats in a row behind them, and Amur suffered three of them on his home ice, where in past seasons the team scored points quite consistently. The away series also began with a defeat; in Nizhnekamsk, Amur lost to the local Neftekhimik 2-3, having played unsuccessfully in the post-match shootout. A series of defeats threw the Khabarovsk club beyond the cup eight, now Amur with 9 points scored is only tenth in the East, risking falling to the very bottom in the near future.
