SKA vs CSKA. Who will win in the battle of two army teams?
The third "army derby" of the current season will be held this time in St. Petersburg. It is there, in the Ice Palace, that the leaders of the Western Conference, SKA and CSKA, will fight on December 21.
The St. Petersburg team can safely record the first part of the regular season as an asset. Wards of Roman Rotenberg gave out a fiery two-month starting period, immediately securing a noticeable points lead in the standings. In the first 25 matches of the championship, SKA lost only twice, immediately defining themselves as the main favorites of the current championship. Newbies fit perfectly into the game concept of the St. Petersburg club. Acquired in the offseason, Nikishin, Zhafyarov, Khairullin without much buildup became the leaders of the club, gaining 95 points for three already for performance.
The only serious bad segment in the championship for the St. Petersburg team came in November, when the army team managed to lose six out of eight matches played. But this failure was rather local in nature, later the army team gathered again, having issued a series of six victorious matches in a row before the break in the championship. Such a winning streak only strengthened the leading positions of the army team, now SKA already has 69 points, which is 15 more than the closest competitor in the Western Conference.
CSKA
One of the competitors is just the second army club - Moscow CSKA. The capital's army team was second in the Western Conference for a long time, but an unsuccessful stretch before the pause in the championship allowed Yaroslavl Lokomotiv to bypass CSKA in the standings. Over the past ten days of the championship, the army team lost twice at home to Omsk Avangard 2-3 and Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo 2-4, as well as on the road to Magnitogorsk Metallurg 1-2. This sad series was diluted with a single victory over their frank outsider HC Sochi, whom the army team beat away with a score of 4-2.
A series of defeats threw the wards of Sergei Fedorov into third place, now CSKA has 53 points scored. It is almost impossible to win back the leading SKA by 16 points, so the main task for CSKA is to regain second place. Only one point separates the capital club from the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, so in the near future the army team may well return to the second position.
